The True Purpose of Scripture: Living Fully With God

By Tim Mulgrew

Hands holding a bible

Somewhere along the way, the Bible became a religious obligation rather than a living invitation. At Enjoy Scripture, we exist to change that — to help you discover what scripture was actually written for, and what it looks like to walk closely with God every single day.

Many churches often emphasize salvation and the promise of Heaven. At Enjoy Scripture, however, our passion lies in exploring the daily walk with God—the journey that happens between salvation and eternity. We believe it’s important to focus on how scripture guides us in our everyday lives and helps us cultivate a genuine relationship with God.

Scripture is more than just a collection of ancient writings; it is God’s “how-to” guide for living life to the fullest. Through His word, God offers us practical wisdom and guidance, inviting us into a close friendship with Him. The Bible gives us insight not only for navigating life’s challenges, but also for deepening our connection with God.

Rethinking Our Approach to the Bible

Let’s face it—many of us read the Bible simply because we feel obligated, treating it as a task to check off our spiritual to-do list. But is this really what God desires? He is not a strict taskmaster; rather, He wants joy to be the foundation of our relationship with Him. Reading scripture should be a source of delight, not just a religious routine. We overlook this because we do not clearly understand what we are reading or the reasons behind why it was written.

Often, we approach the Bible as a history book or a timeline, searching for answers even when we don’t have questions. It’s easy to settle into a comfort zone with familiar verses, but God invites us to discover new wisdom and accept fresh challenges. By opening ourselves to new insights, we allow God to surprise us and deepen our understanding.

If we treat scripture merely as a rulebook, it’s understandable why some people hesitate to seek salvation. No one wants to exchange their freedom for a long list of rules and restrictions. Yet, that was never God’s intention for us. The Bible is meant to bring us closer to God, not to burden us with obligations.

When we misunderstand scripture’s purpose, we risk missing out on the fullness of life that God offers. Non-believers may never experience the joy of a life with God, while believers might try to fill the void with worldly things, only to feel distant from Him. God desires for us to enjoy a rich, satisfying life in His presence.

Returning to God

The good news is that God is always near. If you feel far from Him, remember that He remains where you last walked with Him—waiting patiently for your return. Repentance, which means turning back, brings us right back to His side, ready to continue the journey together that He has for us.

Don’t settle for a distant, routine relationship with God. He invites us into a connection that grows and deepens every day. When we engage with scripture, not as an obligation but as an opportunity to find ourselves in His story, we uncover new layers of meaning and joy. Embracing this perspective enables us to experience God’s presence in ways we never imagined.

At enjoyscripture.com, our purpose is to reveal the joy found in scripture, show how it applies to daily life, and guide you toward a close, personal relationship with God—the way He intends.
